This is a little project I did last night over on Facebook live if you want to catch up. It’s very simple using vintage music sheets or old books, to create lovely neutral tones that stand out against seasonal dark green foliage. I love the natural Scandi look it brings to a mantle, parcel or tree. All it requires is some careful folding, scissors, narrow double sided tape, a crackling fire in the background, maybe a glass of something warming an a mellow festive soundtrack! Happy 1st December guys. I just wanted to wish you all the very best for this season of goodwill and share my latest exciting collaboration. Behind the scenes over the last few months, I’ve been getting crafty with @Dunelmuk, the UK’s biggest home furnishing store. I am so pleased to be able to share a series of crafting projects that you can do at home. Today their fabulous Festival of Christmas kicks off on their YouTube channel and website where you can enjoy my first project , this Scandi inspired Alternative Advent Calendar. It was a joy to make using their new fully recyclable wrapping paper and ribbon. I’ve been waiting so long to start unwrapping these gifts, but now it’s time I love it just as it is! If you do unwrap you can replace with a bauble or a card from loved ones so it evolves into something more special. I do hope you enjoy my projects! You've seen the front entrance Christmas decorations yesterday. Now take a look at the back stairs. These are the kitchen stairs leading up to the bedrooms at the back of our Edwardian property. We moved into the house just over a year ago with a huge amount of work, COVID to contend with and lots of work so the DIY has not been undertaken yet. This is the previous owner's decor so we have the walls and stairs to paint still but I was still determined to bring a little festive cheer into our kitchen backdrop, including a bit of simple greenery and lights on our rustic clock. Here’s a close up of my kitchen stairs with a festive feel. I rarely ever just ‘buy’ decorations , I like to rework them my own way. Here I’ve taken a green faux fir garland base and intertwined some of my favourite faux foliage that I bring out every year. Although I love natural this is the kitchen so it gets very hot so faking it is fine! I love the sculptural shapes of ivy and eucalyptus and the way the lighter green shades contrast with the darker base foliage. If you’re doing this at home simply add baubles in your own accent colour. For us it’s burgundy and some new clear glass shapes, both twinkle beautifully in the fairy lights. So it's literally the hall we've decked first. Here's a hint at what's to come and a full photograph of the bird print fabric decoupage sideboard which was achieved with old M&S bedlinen can you believe! Lots of colour blending to match the tones and lashings of dark wax still make this one of my favourite pieces. Me and Mr M decided to give it a bit more gravitas and place it beneath the porthole window. The perfect window shape for a mariner's house and it lets light flood under the stairwell to light you a warm welcome to the entrance hall. Just off camera to the left is the staircase which is festooned with garlands and natural foliage.. pop back tomorrow to see more of that in detail. How's your decorating going? So it's that time of year to bring a little outside in. If you've seen some of my work over the last month or so you might have noticed that Christmas has come a little early to the House of Mendes. Now that December is hot footing its way to us and I am back to work next week snipping and colouring my clients' hair into festive gorgeousness it was now or never to start decking the halls, so get ready for some Christmas pics. And I also want to say happy Thanksgiving to all my friends across the pond. I have so many reasons to be grateful and your love and support is one of them. I hope you are having a wonderful time with friends and family and staying safe and well. Today's grid gives a hint of what's to come in terms of Christmas colours with freshly picked foliage and a glimpse of a lovely piece of furniture with fabric decoupage that I simply can't part with.
