Using paint as a wood stain

Annie Sloan Graphite is such a versatile colour; as you can see here I’ve just used Graphite as a straight paint with a little distressing… but check out the top, yes look again, I’ve used Graphite as a very light wood stain to tone down the very warm colour of this old pine cabinet! It’s a very simple treatment, just remove all the old finishes by sanding away and once you have got down to the natural timber, mix up your stain anywhere up to 50/50 water and paint. My stain was around 30 percent paint, so it was very loose. It was just enough to give this piece a fresh, cool, new look.
