One-to-one workshop with Jonathon Marc Mendes in Caistor, Lincolnshire

Styling and iPhone Photography can be included as part of my workshop training

It’s fair to say 2019 has run away with itself at such a pace, with travel and teaching commitments all over the world, that I haven’t had as much time as I would like for real world teaching in my workshop in Lincolnshire.

In between working and filming new tutorials for the online Painted Love Academy I have managed to fit in a couple of Paint Pro Days like this one-to-one with the lovely Julia Bishop from Pumpkin Bleu who was one of the very first students to join my academy 6-week Masterclass last year.

Painting together to see exactly how Jonathon works and build confidence first hand

Julia is already an amazing painter but her lovely friends got together and asked her what she wanted for a special birthday. I was humbled and delighted that she chose a painting day with me in my workshop at The Loft in Caistor, Lincolnshire. It’s a space shared with Bricktree Gallery so we have all the paint and accessories we could possibly need to create some fabulous pieces. Julia specifically asked to work on Smoky Blend technique so we asked her to bring a couple of small pieces and worked that into the day. Julia said her confidence grew and she allowed herself to be freer and less restricted than she feels in her own workshop doing commissions.

As you can see I like to have fun when I teach, whether it’s one to one or as a group, we have lots of laughs and try not to take it too seriously. I build my student’s confidence and allow them to use as much paint and as many brushes and techniques as they want. It’s an unrestricted and experimental kind of day where creativity and kindness rule. We talk and laugh a lot!

We also worked on ‘Contour Blending’ as seen in my Vintage Faded Florals tutorial.

Julia and her husband made a weekend of it and stayed at Healing Manor Hotel. There are lots of fabulous places to stay locally – click on the link below for information about the area or contact us for recommendations. We are a 15 minute drive from Humberside Airport with daily flights in from Amsterdam so we’re almost more accessible from Europe than we are from the UK! Our closest train stations are Barnetby (with 16 trains per day traveling from Manchester airport), Grimbsy Town or Market Rasen. Taxis can be booked. Or if you decide to drive Caistor is a small market town with plenty of free parking and has a garage for petrol, several pubs and shops.

Online students become real life friends and colleagues – paint days are magical!

My day with Julia was an absolute pleasure. Her work goes from strength to strength and that very weekend her finger-painted floral sideboard was showcased by Annie Sloan Great Britain which says it all! Here at The Loft, we also host Paint Pro Workshops Days for groups of furniture painting professionals. Whether you’re a group of friends looking for a fun weekend, experienced painters or absolute beginners, I can promise you a great day.
