I am absolutely thrilled to introduce you to Nicky Cash, founder and designer at Done Up North, the very first guest tutor to ‘take me on’ with her Masking Tape Masterclass just launched in my Painted Love Academy.
For those of you who don’t know Nicky, she is one of the UK’s most experienced furniture refinishers. She specialises in mid century modern makeovers and bold geometric designs which she creates with masking tape. Her particular specialism in creating sympathetic designs in keeping with the original character of a piece, often exposing and enhancing the natural wood. She has a thing for stars, bold colours, metallics, cocktail cabinets and tall boys. Nicky was the only double award-winner in The Fliprunway Awards.
For me, 2020 will see the Painted Love Academy develop into the definitive online platform for furniture artists, by inviting others to join me to co-host guest tutorials sharing their insider secrets of ‘how-to’ create standout statement pieces using paint techniques. I had long admired Nicky’s work on social media when we met last July at the inaugural Paintstock Live at Sunny Bank Mills, where Nicky hosted her furniture painting workshops. So for me Nicky was the obvious first choice to take me on in the Academy.
I believe you can learn to use any brand of paint via YouTube, where there are tutorials from all the big brands, but what interests me more is working with furniture artists who do it differently. Brave painters who push the boundaries in the same way that I have with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and Saltwash.
I love the idea of meeting with and learning from true creatives who put their own innovative stamp on furniture painting. When we watch and learn from others we absorb elements of their practice into our own and new styles are born – I see this happening with my students all the time!
Nicky’s crisp, neat approach to prep and methodical ways of working couldn’t be more different from mine, so working together was revelatory!
We had so much fun back in February filming this tutorial together when Nicky came over from Leeds to my workshop in Lincolnshire. She brought all the favourite tools of her trade for precision including Fusion Mineral Paint. I feel honoured that she painted with me sharing her how-tos and top tips with me to create the Masking Tape Masterclass Chevron Table below.
Our joint tutorial follows the style of all my teaching with Materials list, Video, Tips, Hints & Hacks and Styling Tips, and like me, Nicky has insisted that we include her workshop in the 35% off SALE to recognise the tricky financial situation we all find ourselves in right now. Thank you Nicky.
All the pieces in this post feature Done Up North’s scroll-stopping work. Just imagine creating something similar once you’ve tried masking tape too! Nicky Cash is highly esteemed in this industry. She has guested at Grand Designs Live as an associate member of the House of Up and is an industry partner of British Institute of Design. If you don’t follow her on Instagram or Facebook yet you really should.
Got ideas on who I should ‘take on’ next? Drop me a line, I’d love to know.
